  • I am writing to acknowledge the contribution of Alexis Barkwell to the North Medford Softball program this season as the starting pitcher. Alexis accumulated a 25 and 2 record, including an undefeated record in conference play. She has led her team to the number one ranking in the state and to the state championship finals.
The coaches of the conference chose to not acknowledge her accomplishments with the pitcher of the year award. Alexis has demonstrated with her performance and leadership that she was the deserving recipient of the award. The coaches need to examine their criteria and their motives in voting for the year-end awards. Too many times the awards are based on conference politics and petty jealousies rather than an athlete's accomplishments.
Alexis' performance on and off the field has led to her being nominated for the Gatorade softball player of the year award for the state of Oregon. It is nice that she is receiving recognition on a statewide basis that her own conference was not willing to provide. — Lynn McBee, Medford
