Selma man struck and killed on Highway 199 Friday

Russell Richard Brummett, 42, from Selma, was struck by a car and killed Friday as he walked on the southbound shoulder of Highway 199 near Selma.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., a 2011 Hyundai passenger car driven by Patricia M. Shafer, 83, from Cave Junction, was traveling south on Highway 199 near milepost 27 when the car drifted across the fog line and struck Brummet, according to Oregon State Police.

An emergency room doctor and two nurses happened to be driving by and stopped immediately to provide emergency medical care and CPR, but Brummet was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shafer stopped after the crash and was cooperating with police.

Highway 199 was closed for more than 3 hours during the emergency response and scene investigation.
