  • ROSEBURG — The Medford Mustangs American Legion AAA baseball team got off to an undefeated start at the Edward "Pee Wee" Kelley Tournament at Legion Field on Friday, winning two games.
    Medford (12-3) topped the Mid-Valley Rockets, 5-2, and edged Corvallis Gerding Electric, 2-1.
    Against Mid-Valley, Eric Carlson had the go-ahead single in the sixth inning that scored Cody Coggins. Christian Gillis' triple in the fourth again brought home Coggins and tied the game at 2.
    Austin Zavala led off the second inning with a home run.
    Carlson, Coggins, Bryce Rogan and Josh Berman all had two hits against the Rockets. Steen Fredrickson picked up the victory after allowing two unearned runs, three hits and two walks and striking out four in six innings. Coggins earned the save, the first of two for him on the day.
    Against Corvallis, Jared Evans had the go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning. The hit plated Carlson, who finished 3-for-3.
    With two outs in the fifth and his squad trailing 1-0, Gillis drove in Carter Glick, who went 2-for-2.
    Winning pitcher Cody Hoff allowed one run, four hits and two walks and fanned six in six innings. Coggins finished things out with a pair of strikeouts and a pop-up.
    The Mustangs take on Willamette Valley at 1 p.m. and Dr. Stewart's at 9 p.m. today.

    NORTH MEDFORD 7, CHICO BLUE 0 — At Eugene, Preston Johnson pitched a one-hit shutout for the North Medford Mavericks in the Best of the West Tournament at Swede Johnson Stadium.
    Johnson recorded six strikeouts and one walk.
    Tate Cowden and Dakota Adams both had two hits for the Mavericks (9-7), who are 2-2 in the tournament.

    MEDFORD 11, KLAMATH FALLS 5 — At Klamath Falls, Victor Garcia hit a three-run home run and the Rogues built a 7-0 lead en route to the WCL victory.
    Garcia, whose homer came in the second inning, finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored against the Gems (6-12). Spencer Smith went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs, Clayton Meyer 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run and Joe Chavez 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run.
    Medford (11-5) leads Corvallis by 21/2 games for first place in the South.
