  • GRANTS PASS — Jockey Jake Samuels picked up three wins and Jose Madrigal rode Angel Eyez to victory in the featured Carl Alleman Bonus Challenge at Grants Pass Downs on Saturday.
Samuels — who is tied for most wins this season with Kassie Guglielmino and Madrigal with seven — was triumphant in the first, fourth and fifth races.
Matthew Werner-Hagerty navigated victories in the sixth and eighth races.
Two trainers captured a pair of wins on Saturday: Debora Fergason (first and fifth races) and Silvester Juarez (second and fourth races).
The father-son combination of Ruben Magallanes (owner) and Hector Magallanes (trainer) was a winning one in the $7,080-purse Carl Alleman Bonus Challenge, which honored the late quarter horse owner and breeder. Winning horse Angel Eyez secured its second victory at GPD this season and its third in four career starts here. The 3-year-old filly, which finished in 17.61 seconds, was third in the Firecracker Futurity last summer.
Racing resumes today on Ladies Hat Day, when entry is free for women wearing hats excluding baseball caps. Gates open at noon with a post time of 1 p.m.
Cash prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Best Kentucky Derby style hat, best Western-themed hat, best hat with coordinating outfit and most original hat.
