The Southern Oregon Chautauqua opened auspiciously in Ashland Tuesday, the initial attraction being the Chicago Glee Club. Four consecutive appearances of this organization did not prove to be a surfeit of a good thing. The versatility of the club is such that its individual members are equally at home in both vocal and instrumental selections. Very pleasing precludes to the last two concerts were given by Miss Edna Lowe, a reader of more than ordinary ability.
Today was Kansas reunion and former residents of the Sunflower state were present from all over the valley. It was also the first day of the Mining Congress, which is being held in the Elks' temple, attended by delegates throughout territory extending from Seattle to San Francisco.
Friday will be Grants Pass-Ohio day, also the closing sessions of the Mining Congress will occur. Patrons are looking forward for rare treats at the hands of talent from Grants Pass and Medford on their respective days. It is only necessary to remember the feast of musical and literary gems which were so freely bestowed by the neighboring cities at the last year's assembly. Medford will be here in force July 16.
A battalion of manly boys and a bevy of bright girls are in active training under the direction of Prof. Savimore, an old time instructor of the young folks. The professor is more than a physical director, being a great favorite with everybody for his genial qualities. Savimore's "circus" has been a Chautauqua star attraction for years, and this season's event on July 16 will rival the efforts of former successes.
The management this season has furthered the policy of entertaining its visitors. Those appearing on the program are considered as personal guests and extra efforts have been made to render courtesies in line with a desire to make their stay in Southern Oregon as pleasant as possible. Citizens in general are aiding in this movement.
The grounds never looked finer. Chautauqua park is an ideal resort and is rapidly filling up with tents.
