  • Mustangs gain key Area 4 sweep in Eugene

  • EUGENE — Christian Gillis' bases-clearing double highlighted a 10-run inning in the first game of a doubleheader for the Medford Mustangs American Legion AAA team, which earned 12-5 and 7-5 victories over Eugene in Area 4 play Monday.
    In that 10-run fourth inning, the Mustangs (21-13) sent 14 batters to the plate. Gillis finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
    Taylor Raff, Eric Carlson and David Crofton all had two hits and an RBI in the opener for the Mustangs, with Raff scoring twice.
    In Game 2, the Challengers cut Medford's lead to 6-5 in the fifth inning but the Mustangs were able to fend off a comeback attempt.
    Micah Brown hit a two-run double to help give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Challengers, however, evened the score in the fourth before Medford answered with three more runs in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.
    Crofton and Bryce Rogan both went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for Medford. Crofton also scored twice and Rogan crossed home plate once.

    American Legion A
    CENTRAL POINT 4-6, GRANTS PASS DIGGERS 1-3 — At Grants Pass, Brady Roland combined to go 4-for-6 with two runs and three RBIs and picked up a pitching victory in the Area 4 doubleheader.
    Roland was 2-for-3 with one run in each game, stroking a three-run triple in the second inning of Game 2 to help his own cause. The right-hander struck out four and allowed six hits for the win.
    Avery Martin was 2-for-3 and his RBI single in the fourth inning added to an RBI double by Cavin Gillispie that gave Central Point (21-7, 9-1 Area 4) a 3-0 advantage in the opener. Dylan Pearce earned the win with eight strikeouts.
    In Game 2, Dylan Morgan was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI, Caine Smith 2-for-4 with one RBI and Christian McCormick 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

    WOLFPACK 8-2, SOUTH MEDFORD 2-8 — Tyler Sakraida turned in a solid outing from the mound and plate to lead the Wolfpack to a victory in the opener before South Medford salvaged a split in the Area 4 doubleheader at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
    Sakraida went the distance and allowed two runs — one earned — on five hits, one walk and struck out five.
    His two-run triple in the bottom of the third bolstered the Wolfpack lead to 7-0.
    Kyle Ferguson, Kollen Roohr and Travis Danielson all had two hits for the Wolfpack (7-17, 6-10 Area 4), a team comprised of players from Cascade Christian, St. Mary's, Rogue River, Phoenix and Eagle Point.
    In Game 2, the Colts' Jeff Letendre surrendered just two runs on four Wolfpack hits to pick up the win. The Colts were also beneficiaries of four Wolfpack errors that led to five runs.

    HENLEY 5-6, ASHLAND 4-16 — At Klamath Falls, Henley stormed back from two runs down to take the first game on a walk-off single, but Ashland got revenge in a big way by pounding 15 hits in the nightcap.
    Ashland pitcher Kyle Milgram held Henley to two runs on four hits in 51/3 innings in the opener but Pilots relief pitcher Nick Sanderson took the loss after Henley rallied with three straight singles in the bottom of the seventh.
    Game 2 was a different story for Ashland (10-17) after Sanderson was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, Jerry Carroll 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs, Caleb Bell 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs and Tarquin Daley 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.
