  • U.S. Cellular Community Park will host to the ASA Western National Tournament for 14-and-under girls fastpitch softball teams beginning July 28.
    The tournament, coordinated by the Medford Parks and Recreation Department, will feature 29 teams, including the Crater Comets and squads from as far away as Ellensburg, Wash., and San Diego.
    The event was awarded to Medford after a bidding process in 2012.
    The week-long tournament begins July 28 with a 6 p.m. opening ceremony at U.S. Cellular. Pool play games begin at 9 a.m. July 29 and double-elimination bracket play starts July 31.
    The championship game is at 1 p.m. Aug. 3.
    The tournament field features six Oregon teams, including the state champion Oregon Silver Bullets from Portland, state runner-up Grants Pass and Roseburg.
    Nineteen teams are traveling to Medford from California and three from Washington, including Southern California ASA champion Escondido Extreme and Washington ASA champion Ellensburg Synergy.
