The vineyard is located on a picturesque 87-acre mountain estate in an area rich in scenery and wildlife. Enjoy Bordeaux-style merlots and a unique tasting experience from the deck overlooking the upper valley vineyard. Tasting is available Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
Owner Vicki Nickerson manages the vineyard, makes wine and pours tasting portions on her deck at her home inside the vineyard, all with the help of only one full-time employee and a consultant.
The tasting deck is temporary until Nickerson converts a house she purchased on the property into a tasting room, or until she collaborates with the new Stone River tasting room just across the road.
The deck has tables and cushioned chairs facing a hillside with rows of grapes below. Nickerson grows pinot noir, syrah, tempranillo, viognier and pinot gris but specializes in making estate merlot in the Bordeaux style.
Purchased by Nickerson in 2004, the vineyard has been producing grapes for the award-winning Oregon winery A to Z, in Dundee, for the past few years. An Oregon native, Nickerson grew up in Coos Bay before spending 35 years in Fairbanks, Alaska, running a general store.
Between 2004 and 2008, Nickerson traveled back and forth between Talent and Fairbanks running both businesses until she decided to focus all of her attention on the winery. Since July 2008, when Nickerson moved to Southern Oregon with her 30-year-old horse, Lacy, in tow, she has been making wines under her Aurora Vines label.
