OK, so I like doing the dishes. Every now and then I end up washing and stacking a great big stack of them and sometimes I will call my wife Samarra in, caveman style, to behold my work. I did this on December 10th, 2011 and she said, "Oh that's a good one, you should photograph it." So I did. And then the next night I did it again and it got to be a habit. I started a "Dish Whisperer" photo gallery on Flickr and started uploading a new picture every night. I tend to follow and give energy to all of my creative impulses no matter how unusual, because I know from experience that while some of them lead nowhere, many of them lead to unexpected and wonderful things. I just have no way of telling which are which, so I follow them all, at least for a while. Anyway, about 3 or 4 months into taking daily pictures of my dish stacking, I wrote this song. As soon as I was done with the song, I knew right away that a year's worth of dishes would make a great slide show to accompany the song. Aha! I knew there was some reason I was doing this! Anyway, I completed the year and here it is. It wasn't easy...during the Summer I went out to the Oregon Coast for a T'ai-Chi retreat...but luckily my friends and I stayed at a motel with a kitchenette so I was able to continue without breaking my streak...you'll see a handful of pictures that look different from the rest. Also, towards the very end of my quest, on day 360, my back went out! There was no way I was going to bail so close to the end, so I managed to hobble over and for a few days, I did the dishes stooped over with my elbows resting on the edge of the sink. As of today, January 16th, 2013, I'm still adding pictures daily to my Dish Whisperer gallery...not sure how long I'll continue but for now, it's a habit that's easy to maintain.
Special thanks to my good friend and videographer Doug Cochran here in Ashland Oregon who helped me with the video.
