Founded in 1926 by dancer and choreographer Martha Graham, the Martha Graham Dance Company is the oldest and most celebrated contemporary dance company in America. And its dancers will be on the Britt stage at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, and Saturday, Aug. 25.
In fact, the company's Web site, marthagraham.org, notes, the Jacksonville performance is the only one set this month. The rest of August is dedicated to rehearsals and intensive workshops preparing for the 80th anniversary New York season next month.
The company's performances here each night will include three dances choreographed by Graham: "Diversion of Angels," from 1948, Sketches from "Chronicle," from 1936 and "Acts of Light," from 1981.
Reserved seats cost $48; lawn seats are $28, and children 12 and younger get in for $19.
A pre-performance talk is set for 7:30 p.m.
Company members also will offer master classes for dancers who are at least 12 and have at least intermediate skills. The classes will be at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, and noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at McNeil Pavilion on the Southern Oregon University campus in Ashland. Tickets for the class are $20 and must be obtained in advance from the Britt box office, 216 W. Main St., Medford, or 773-6077.
