Learn about police work

The Medford Police Department is accepting applications for a 33-hour Citizen's Academy that starts Jan. 2.

The course will run from 7 to 10 p.m. each Wednesday through March 13, at the Medford City Hall's Council Chambers, 411 W. Eighth St., Medford.

Topics covered in the program include the department's philosophy of service; criminal investigations; prosecution of cases; patrol and traffic operations; recruitment and training of police personnel; drug enforcement and gang suppression; use of force; the canine program; and deployment and tactics of SWAT.

Participants must be 18 years old. Applications are available at the Medford Police Department's Training Unit or Records Department.

The class is open to Medford residents and people who work in Medford. Applicants will be screened because of the course content, then admitted on a first come, first served basis, based on the date their application was received. The deadline for applying is Dec. 21. Class size is limited to 30.
