Most rafts and driftboats seen on the Rogue River and other nearby streams are created in the Rogue Valley, as are the best paddles and oars to operate them.

Talent-based Sawyer Paddles and Oars is in its 45th year of building paddles and oars, tracing its roots to canoe racer Ralph Sawyer who set up shop in Rogue River in 1967.

Sawyer now owns what used to be its main competitor, Smoker. The firm builds all sorts of wood and composite paddles and oars that can be matched to the rower and the boat.

Order at www.paddlesandoars.com or purchase at local businesses, including most boat manufacturers and Northwest Outdoor Store in Medford.
