A High Schooler's Costume Party

Teenagers need little or no help having fun. Create a festive environment and provide plenty of food and the party is likely to be a success.

A costume party is fun any time of the year. Challenge party guests to come up with unique ideas for costumes and offer prizes for the most original, the funniest, and the most artistic costumes.

Food

Have your local deli make up a giant sub for your party.

Or, be bold and make your own with cold cuts, lettuce, tomato, oil, vinegar and Italian seasoning. Be sure to have a vegetarian alternative available, like a roasted eggplant and mozzarella sub.

Make sure to have plenty of munchies on hand -- chips, veggies and dip, pretzels, candies.

Snacking is thirsty work. Stock up on soda, fruit drinks and ice. Make sure there's cold water on hand as well.

Cake or ice cream . . . why choose? Layer your teen's favorite ice cream flavors with layers of cake and freeze for your own homemade icecream cake.

Or, if you want a traditional cake, check out your local supermarket bakery or neighborhood bakery. Many now offer a neat service where they will actually put an actual edible picture on your cake. Imagine
your son or daughter's surprise when they open up a box containing a cake emblazoned with their image.

If you are baking your own cake, take advantage of your teenaged guests' adventurous palettes. Try using fresh fruits and other exotic flavorings instead of just plain old chocolate or vanilla.

Activity Ideas

  • Spend some time with the birthday teen and create a music play-list for the party. If possible, use an MP3 player to keep the tunes playing for several hours.

  • Leave a variety of board games around.

  • Give each guest a disposable camera, and ask them to take lots of pictures and leave it behind. Order double prints to share with guests.
