Party Advice From Expert Party Planners

Local pros offer tips designed to make your bash a success.

5 Party Planning Do's

  • A childís temperament should be a guiding factor in planning a party: Some children favor more structured parties loaded with activities, while more outgoing children might be better suited to a less formal celebration and prefer just hanging out with few close friends.

  • Consider a childís age: Younger children tire more quickly than older kids, and so plan for naps if necessary.

  • Choose the best location: In the winter, the party will be indoors, so how many people can you comfortably fit in your home? You may still have to rent tables and move furniture. A venue outside the home means no wear and tear and no cleanup

  • Determine the right party size: The younger the birthday child, the smaller the group of kids recommended at the birthday party.

  • Set the partyís length: Most young, grade-school children canít handle more than three hours.

5 Party Planning Doníts

  • Donít spend money on an elaborate party just to spend money. A birthday party celebration should never put too much of a financial or emotional strain on a family.

  • Donít ignore the desires of your child. At a certain age, your child may not want a large party anymore. Talk to your child about it.

  • As a parent, donít necessarily try to live up to or change the way your parents did parties for you and apply that to your childrenís celebration.

  • Donít compete with other parents in a oneupmanship competition for that perfect party. Most kids donít even notice if everything is perfectly decorated or coordinated. Maintain perspective.

  • Donít plan a party with too many structured activities. Kids need time to mingle and play and be themselves. Let the kids be kids.
