Medford was established in 1883 when the Oregon & California Railroad came through the area. "Oregon Geographic Names" credits David Loring, an engineer obtaining right of way for the railroad, with naming the town. Loring, a Massachusetts native, said the name was suggested by Medford, Mass., and honored the new burg's location on the middle ford of Bear Creek. Medford's post office opened Feb. 6, 1884. The town grew quickly and became the Jackson County seat in 1927.
