Johan Mathiesen knows what he'd like to have etched on his tombstone after he springs from this mortal coil.
Jacksonville, named for President Andrew Jackson, boomed up quickly after gold was discovered on Rich Gulch in the winter of 1851. It was originally called Table Rock City and became the county seat in 1853. However, the Oregon & California Railroad bypassed Jacksonville and routed through Medford instead, making that town a hub. Voters moved the county government to Medford in 1927, and Jacksonville languished for decades. In 1966 it earned a National Historic Landmark designation. The preservation efforts have become a point of local pride and an economic engine as tourists and residents are drawn to Jacksonville.
