Mormon temple draws 45,000

CENTRAL POINT -- More than 45,000 people visited the Mormons' Medford Oregon Temple during the seven-day open house that ended Friday.

As of 5 p.m. Friday, 43,471 people toured the newest temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, according to Glen Harper, the temple secretary.

"We've had people coming from all over, from Reno, from Washington, from Southern California," he said. "We even had a few come from Wyoming."

The temple, the 77th built around the globe by the Mormons, was open to everyone March 24 and 25, and Monday through Friday. Encompassing nearly 11,000 square feet, the temple is at 2305 Taylor Road in Central Point.

With the public tours concluded, the temple is closed to the general public. After its dedication on April 16, only Mormons judged worthy will be admitted to the temple.

Church officials said that earlier estimates that nearly 35,000 people visited during the first two days was off by about 10,000, because the automatic counter was misread.

"But we had only anticipated about 32,000 during the entire period, so this far exceeded what we anticipated," Harper said.

The temple will serve more than 28,600 Mormons who live within the temple district, which covers Southern Oregon and Northern California.

Although the first LDS stake in Southern Oregon didn't organize until 1953, there are now some 6,000 members in Jackson, 3,000 in Josephine and 2,500 in Klamath counties.
