Since You Asked You can wait tables at 17, but you can’t serve alcohol I’d like to get a job as a waitress, but I’m only 17. How old do I have to be before I can serve alcoholic beverages? — Amanda W., Medford If you can stand to be on your feet for hours, remember people’s orders and smile at even the most irritating customers, you can be a waitress right now, Amanda. But you won’t be able to serve alcoholic beverages for a year. Servers of alcohol must be at least 18 years old and are limited in their duties until they’re 21, according to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission. They must take an OLCC-approved server education course, pass an exam, submit to a criminal background check and pay $23 for their permit. Some 85,000 people hold alcohol service permits in Oregon.
