Who appointed the media?
Who appointed the media to be America's conscience? We can reach our own conclusions about this war. You are neither qualified, trustworthy, nor smart enough to suppose that Americans need you to tell us if our government is doing well. At least they have been honest and said this war against terrorism could go on for years - most wars have. Try being a part of the solution, not a major part of the problem. - Ken Marlin, Ashland We need free-thinking childrenIt is a sad day in America when people write that a child who has the courage to speak her mind about not pledging allegiance is told to leave the country. The hypocrites still don't get what America is supposed to be about: freedom. Just because someone disagrees with you gives you no right to force your opinion on them. Too bad we don't have more free-thinking children. - Kathy Pabst, Medford Interchange needs better lightingI seriously question the reduction of lighting at Ashland's northern freeway connection. I've long felt the illumination for drivers turning left from Valley View onto the northbound freeway inadequate. Although oncoming traffic and that exiting the freeway are controlled by stop signs, the safest angle of entrance to the on-ramp is not clearly visible until just before reaching it. This situation is particularly challenging in winter, with early darkness and more frequent wet road conditions. - Roger R. Humphreys, Medford Reconsider criticism of BushAfter watching the president's participation in the very moving opening ceremonies of game three of the World Series on Tuesday night, I would hope that people in the camp of the letter writer of Sept. 13 and former Grants Pass Daily Courier columnist Dan Guthrie would be encouraged to reconsider their criticism regarding Bush's public presence. Osama probably missed it because it's hard to watch television when you're constantly peeking out of the cave. - Don Bennett, Medford Slow economy worse than anthraxTo all the fearful people of the Rogue Valley I would like to say, "Lighten up!" More people will die from the common cold, slipping in their bathtubs, from drunk drivers or old age than will die from anthrax. The purpose of terrorism is to scare people and make them change their lifestyles. Well, folks, it sounds like the terrorists are winning. Let us all just keep an extra lookout on our mail, and relax. You do not need a gas mask, and even if you had one you would not wear it since they are very uncomfortable. My personal advice: Go out to dinner, see a movie, buy clothes or buy a new car. Meaning help your economy and our fellow Americans by pulling ourselves out of this slow economy, which by the way is more harmful than anthrax. - Ted E. Fletscher, Talent Maybe she reads MollyMy wife and I have visited over 80 countries and can guarantee there are an awful lot of people who would gladly switch places with the young writer from Central Point. Perhaps a few months in the slums of Lima or Cairo would convince her that despite America's faults, this is still the best place on earth to live. Like many others I too fought for the right of individuals to freely express their opinions. Many countries not only do not permit free speech, but punish you severely for even trying to express your beliefs. Yes, there is greed and many people are treated unfairly, but she should be thanking God she lives here instead of condemning those that do. How could someone as young as she is develop such a bitter, cynical attitude? Perhaps she read Molly Ivins too often. - Pierce Kibbey, Central Point |
