Bulldog boxers to compete at Fairgrounds

Showtime nears.

The Medford-based Bulldog Boxing Club rings in its biggest event of the year Saturday. Fight Nite at the Jackson County Fairgrounds' Olsrud Arena features eight afternoon bouts starting at 2 p.m. and a main card of 10-15 bouts beginning at 7 p.m.

Bulldog Boxing founder Joe Pedrojetti is excited about an evening lineup that includes many of the local amateur boxers he has helped mold into consistent national-title contenders.

"As far as quality of boxers, it's by far the best show we've had locally," Pedrojetti says.

Enrique Gallegos is one of the decorated Rogue Valley fighters in action. A 147-pounder in the senior division who claimed the Ringside national championship last summer, Gallegos faces Luis Lowe of Carson City, Nev. Lowe is a Nevada Golden Gloves champion.

Javier Torres, a 13-year-old, 132-pound Bulldog boxer who has won two junior national titles, is battling Luis Lowe's younger brother, Mike, a junior Golden Gloves semifinalist.

Lorenzo Rios, Jr., a 16-year-old, 125-pound Bulldog athlete who is ranked No. 3 in the nation in his division, is seeking revenge against Jimmy Saldana of Reno, Nev., who defeated Rios, Jr., last year.

Fransua Moncada, a 119-pound Bulldog fighter in the senior division who has a runner-up finish in the national Golden Gloves competition, is boxing Ricardo Junez of Napa, Calif., a two-time junior national champion.

Salvador Regaldo, a Bulldog fighter who has claimed three Golden Gloves crowns and boxes as a 125-pound senior, is matched up against Miguel Villalobos of Napa, a two-time junior national champion.

"Our kids have really worked hard," Pedrojetti says. "They have been working hard for quite some time, but we've really poured it on the last two weeks."
