Local soccer teams prepare for playoffs

Local soccer teams kick off their quests for postseason glory Saturday, when the Class 4A and 3A/2A/1A boys and girls playoffs begin with first-round action.

In 4A boys play, South Medford, the Southern Oregon Conference's No. 2 seed, travels to Oregon City. There, the Panthers (11-2-1 overall) will encounter at 2 p.m. a Pioneers squad that tied for a share of the Three Rivers League crown but lost a tiebreaker with co-champ West Linn to end up with the TRL's No. 2 seed.

After knocking off Thurston, 2-1 in overtime, in subtournament action Tuesday, North Medford travels to Valley League champion Corvallis for a 3 p.m. match. The Black Tornado (8-4-2), which finished fourth in the SOC, faces a tall task in upsetting the Spartans, state runners-up last fall.

Ashland (10-2) also makes its way to Corvallis, to tangle with Valley No. 2 seed Crescent Valley at 4 p.m. The Grizzlies took third in the SOC.

SOC champion Klamath Union plays host to Sprague at noon.

In 4A girls games, SOC winner South Medford and runner-up North Medford are both home.

The Panthers (11-2-1) are up against Hood River Valley, the Mt. Hood Conference's fourth seed, at 1 p.m. at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park.

The Tornado (9-3) welcomes Wilson, the Portland Interscholastic League's third seed, to Hoffbuhr Field at 1 p.m.

SOC third seed KU must face perennial state power Jesuit in Beaverton at 11 a.m.

In boys 3A/2A/1A play, District 6 co-champion Phoenix, which won the No. 1 seed on a coin flip, stays home at Hagler-James Park to take on Delphian, the third seed from District 4, at 2 p.m.

Defending state champion and co-District 6 winner Hidden Valley begins title defense at 1 p.m. in Murphy against Marist, No. 2 from District 4.

St. Mary's, which claimed the third District 6 spot by surviving the district playoffs, opens on the road at District 3 No. 2 team Brookings-Harbor at 2 p.m.

In the 3A/2A/1A girls playoffs, District 6 champion St. Mary's and runner-up Cascade Christian both have first-round byes. They begin playoff runs Tuesday.

North Valley earned the third spot from District 6 and plays at Cascade, third from District 8, at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday.
