Klamath Union runs past Crater KLAMATH FALLS - Penalties and rushing yards were abundant Friday when Klamath Union squared off with Crater in a Southern Oregon Conference finale for both squads at Modoc Field. Brad Mejia rushed for 248 yards and scored five touchdowns as the Pelicans out-dueled running back Dan Casey and Crater. Casey didn't get the win in his final prep contest, but he did go out with 336 yards on the ground. "Mostly it was their draw play (we couldn't stop)," said Klamath Union coach Wayne Amos. "We've had problems all year stopping the run, and I think the last five games our opponents have had a 200-yard rusher." But it was Klamath's fly offense that was unstoppable in the beginning. Mejia scored on runs of 8, 5, 27 and 35 to give the Pelicans a comfortable 29-0 lead at the half. Casey put Crater on the board in the third quarter with the first of his two touchdown runs. His final score brought the Comets to within 35-21 midway through the final stanza. Crater penalties pushed Klamath Union down near the goal line and D.J. Munoz capped the scoring for KU with a 9-yard touchdown reception. The Comets hurt themselves with 20 penalties for 174 yards, while the Pelicans didn't fare much better with 19 flags for 176. Klamath Union, which was picked to finish eighth in the conference by coaches at the beginning of the year, ended the season at 3-6 overall and 2-5 in the SOC. "We were in a lot of those games that we lost," said Amos, whose Pelicans tied with Ashland for fifth place. "With the exception of the North and Roseburg games, we played everybody pretty tough this year." |
