Hidden Valley girls slip by Cascade Christian

Prep Soccer
MURPHY — Hidden Valley has hopes of winning the District 6 girls soccer crown.

The first hurdle in achieving that goal was successfully cleared Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over playoff hopeful Cascade Christian.

The Mustangs (2-0) got goals from Emily Misner in the 11th minute and Jill Elder in the 47th to hold off the Challengers.

"Defensively, we played real well," said sixth-year Hidden Valley coach Gary Elledge, whose team held a 35-10 advantage in shots on goal. "We kept the ball pushed up on our offensive half for most of the game."

Cascade Christian (1-1) trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the 57th minute when Katie O’Brien converted a penalty kick.

But the Challengers couldn’t overcome the hefty deficit in shots.

"Cascade Christian was much improved from last year," said Elledge. "I think if the ball would have bounced just right for us a few times we could have scored more. But part of that goes to Cascade Christian’s credit. They managed to disrupt a lot of our shots."

Misner’s goal in the first half was assisted by Denise Powell, while Kayla Flick sent in a corner kick to set up Elder’s close-range score.

The Mustangs’ next task comes Saturday in a crucial early-season matchup with Skyline power Phoenix.

"We improved a lot offensively since Henley," Elledge said of the 2-0 triumph over the Hornets in the season opener last Saturday. "We just need to keep improving.

"I think if we keep improving from now until that game we’ll be fine."
