Phoenix outlasts Mustangs in sudden death
MURPHY Regulation and overtime werent enough to decide a crucial early season girls soccer matchup between Phoenix and Hidden Valley Saturday.
The two unbeaten teams battled to a sudden-death shootout before Phoenix freshman Carlee Storey sent in the game-winning goal to clinch a 3-2 (5-4 shootout) victory in District 6 action.
"It was a great, great day," said Pirates coach John Doty. "I would have been happy either way because it was such a well-played game. But obviously I feel better that we
won."
Sixth-ranked Phoenix (3-0) needed a last-minute goal by Theta Frasier-Corry to help the Pirates rally from a 2-nil deficit and send the contest into overtime tied at 2-all.
Both teams went scoreless and neither side could squeeze in the deciding score in the first shootout against goalkeepers Alex Hanscom (Phoenix) and Melissa Henner (Hidden Valley).
"It was pretty tense in that first shootout," said Doty, who inserted Hanscom into goal strictly for the shootout. "Both goalkeepers got a touch on each shot except for one. We
were sure one was going to get turned out, but each kid hit just enough of it to get it in."
Freshman Ariana Fleischman opened the scoring for the ninth-ranked Mustangs in the 18th minute of regulation off a corner kick from Kayla Flick.
In the 20th minute, Bailey Southern tacked on another score off a direct kick from 35 yards out for a 2-0 Hidden Valley lead at the half.
Molly Hobson put Phoenix on the board in the 57th when she converted a corner kick by Tamara Heryford with a diving header. Frasier-Corry scored the equalizer 20 minutes later.
"Thats probably one of the best high school games Ive seen in several years," said Hidden Valley coach Gary Elledge. "I would play Phoenix every week if I could.
You learn so much as a team from games like that."
The momentum swung to Phoenix when the Pirates rallied around an injured teammate. Terra Fry went down on the field and stayed down for nearly 15 minutes with back spasms.
"I certainly felt like when Terra went down, the girls pulled together," Doty said. "I was out on the field with Terra but apparently they said to each other this is the
time, and weve gotta step up. And thats what they did."
ST. MARYS 2, ROGUE RIVER 1 At Rogue River, St. Marys overcame the absence of two starters to claim the District 6 win.
Sweepers Whitney Adderson and Mia Rawson both sat out the contest due to injury.
Rogue River (0-2) took advantage of the defensive holes with a goal five minutes in by Angie Caschiera.
The Crusaders (2-1) answered in the 10th minute with a goal by Megan Frankel off an assist by Kayla Eichamer.
Hanna Heyke tacked on the final St. Marys score from an assist by Kelsey Gross in the 14th minute.
St. Marys held a 26-1 advantage in shots on goal.
