Wilhelm’s overtime goal dooms Pirates

Prep Soccer
TALENT — North Valley star midfielder Kayla Wilhelm wiggled free on a breakaway and scored in the 12th minute of overtime to lead the ninth-ranked Knights to a 4-3 victory over sixth-ranked Phoenix in a high-profile District 6 girls soccer match Tuesday at Hagler-James Park.

The winning goal spoiled a frenetic Phoenix comeback that saw the Pirates rally from a 3-1 deficit in the final six minutes of regulation play to tie the match.

"I thought we had the momentum once we went to overtime, but Wilhelm’s a tremendous player, and she came through when it counted," said Phoenix coach John Doty. "We knew she was a threat, and we defensed her pretty well in the midfield, but she moved to the front line in the overtimes and that changed the dynamics of our defense.

"She got her opportunity and capitalized on it."

Phoenix had an opportunity to tie the match in the second segment of overtime, but North Valley goalie Chelsea Giesen made a spectacular save of Alex Hanscom’s direct kick from 30 yards out.

The win lifted the Knights to 5-1 in District 6 play and kept them in a tie for first place with Hidden Valley. Phoenix dropped to 4-2.

Trailing 3-1, Phoenix scored in the 74th minute on a goal by Marci Klimek. Terra Fry set it up by blasting a shot from 35 yards out. The ball rolled off Klimek and into the net.

The Pirates then tied the match in the 77th minute when Theta Fraser-Curry connected off a corner kick from Klimek.

North Valley led 2-1 at halftime, then needed just 38 seconds of the second half to score again. Karli Clark got that goal when she charged up the middle of the field and launched a long shot that found the net.

Clark and Alex Hanscom tallied the Knights’ first two goals.

"We showed an awful lot of heart to dig our way back into the match," said Doty, whose team played its second straight match without star defender Tamara Heryford because of injury. "When you give up a goal fairly late in the first half and then another one at the start of the second half, that’s usually a back-breaker.

"But we came back and had a chance to win."

  • CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1, HENLEY 0, SHOOTOUT — At Henley, Lindsey Blodgett’s goal in the ninth round of a shootout provided Cascade Christian with the victory.

Wiltrout scored the only goal of the first half on a header off a corner kick by Gonzalez at the seventh minute.

The Crusaders took the lead for good two minutes later on Seth Hill’s individual effort that finished with a score.

Miller tallied on a breakaway at the 36th minute to put the Crusaders ahead 3-1.

Austin Grant intercepted a Monarchs back pass on the opening possession of the second half and took it down for a score to give the Crusaders a two-goal cushion.

At the 48th minute, Grant scored on a header off a Miller corner kick.
