Southern Oregon addsveteran defensive coach
ASHLAND — Veteran coach Mike Hoskins has joined Southern Oregon University's football program as defensive coordinator.
Hoskins comes to Ashland after a three-year stint as head coach at NCAA Division III Rockford (Ill.) College, where he guided the Regents to consecutive 7-3 campaigns.
His 2005 Rockford staff contained current Raider head coach Steve Helminiak, assistant head coach B.J. Robertson and quarterbacks coach Jake Olsen. Prior to taking over at Rockford in 2003, he spent two years as the school's defensive coordinator. Under his tutelage, the 2001 Rockford team ranked eighth nationally for total defense (218 yards per game).

The four-day competition was held at Green Lake Park.
In addition to the gold medals, Ashland garnered seven silver medals and nine bronze.
The six-year-old club was one of 109 competing.
The women's E eight led from start to finish on the 1,000-meter course, upsetting crews from the East Coast, Washington and California. Team members were Judith Cope, Cathy Tronquet, Leah Wingfield, Deborah Gordon, Cathy Gerking, Toni Knox, Barbara Tennant and Robin Eckert, with Beth Hoffman as coxswain.
The competition was divided into age groups, and the E group represents an average crew age of 55-59.
Tronquet, Cope, Wingfield and Gordon also teamed up to win the women's E quad.
Crews competed in qualifying heats on Thursday and Friday and in finals on Saturday and Sunday.
In one of the closest finishes of the regatta, Judy Oursler and Leslie Klecan edged fellow Ashland rowers Jennifer Stoke and Diane Green by 3/100ths of a second for the silver medal in the women's B double final. The four women later joined forces to win the women's B quad, also by a narrow margin: 3/10ths of a second over a team from Connecticut.
The men's D quad set a blistering time of 3:13.78, good for gold and the national championship for crew members Scott Knox, Dan Dammann, Torsten Heycke and Jim Sims.
Heycke and Sims also teamed up to claim a gold medal in the men's lightweight E double.
Coach Joe Lusa brought home five medals, including a gold in the men's G quad event with Ron Iverson, Dan Hirsch and Carl Prufer, and another gold with Prufer in the men's G pair.
Coach Alfred Czerner, 72, won the men's lightweight H double with Prufer and was part of medal-winning teams in several other events.

Evans, Galante helpOregon team win crown
Hayden Evans and Brandon Galante of Medford helped an Oregon team win the 11-year-old championship last week at the California Competitive Youth Baseball tournament in Fullerton, Calif.
The two, playing on a team of primarily Portland-area players, helped Oregon Metro to a 7-1 record in the weeklong, pool-play event. Metro defeated the Yankees from Fullerton, 13-3, it the championship game, thereby avenging its lone loss.
In the title game, Evans, who attends Lone Pine Elementary, had an RBI, and Galante, who goes to Lincoln Elementary, scored a run.
Both players competed in the Medford American Little League this summer.
