I am new to Medford and want to know what type hummingbirds are here. Do they migrate or will they spend the winter with me?
-- Dolores B., Medford
You'll see two kinds of hummers in Jackson County for sure, Dolores, and three if you look around and have a bit of luck. If you can catch them, they're great barbecued on Ritz crackers. We're KIDDING! They taste horrible. Besides there's not much meat on them and they're far more fun to watch.
The familiar Anna's hummingbird is the one that sticks it out here all year round, which is why if you feed hummers it's important to keep feeding all winter. The males have that spectacular flash of red on the throat and head. The females are green.
You should also see plenty of rufous hummingbirds from about May through August. They're rufous colored, or coppery red, and the females have green backs. These are possibly the feistiest hummers, and that's saying something. Come this time of year, they're outta here, heading south.
You may also see tiny calliope hummingbirds, our smallest birds, in the summer. The best places to look are mountain meadows where there are flowers. These little guys are dull green, and the males have magenta throat stripes.
