Local volleyball clubslates Sunday tryouts

The Southern Oregon Volleyball Club will be hosting tryouts on Sunday for traveling teams ranging from an 18-and-under league to 11-and-under.

All Southern Oregon volleyball players are welcome to attend the tryouts at Ashland High. Registration for all age levels is $30 and includes a T-shirt.

For AAU ages 11U-14U, registration is from 4-5 p.m. and the tryout is from 5-6:30 p.m. For USAV ages 15U-18U, registration is from 1-2 p.m. and the tryout is from 2-4:30 p.m.

Some teams travel to Colorado, California (Sacramento and San Francisco), Nevada (Reno), Washington (Spokane) and Portland, and others play locally.

Ashland team winsPop Warner state title

The Ashland Bears beat the Sheldon Titans, 6-0, last Sunday to claim the state championship in Junior Pee Wee Pop Warner football at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.

The team is made up of boys age 9-11 from Ashland, Medford and Jacksonville, and is coached by Greg White. The championship is the first in Ashland Pop Warner history.

Medford's Adrian Garcia scored the lone touchdown of the championship game on a 45-yard pass from quarterback Danial White in the second quarter. The Bear defense held firm from there to cap an undefeated season 11-0 and post their fifth straight shutout.

Towe claims secondRegional championship

Hedrick Middle School standout Taylor Towe placed first in the Northwest Regional Punt, Pass & Kick competition this past Sunday in Seattle.

The performance was a repeat effort for Towe, who also won the title in her competitive debut last year.
