Comets clip Knights in season-opening victory

MERLIN — It took the Crater boys basketball team nearly three quarters of its season opener to exploit a major height advantage over North Valley in a nonconference game Tuesday.

The Comets led 37-35 at the half, then began to use their size in the second half to pick apart the Knights in a 75-61 victory.

James Oshel, a 6-foot-5 senior, had 18 points and 6-4 junior transfer Drew Runberg added 14 for the Comets, who held a 41-21 edge in rebounds. Ben Louie and Chase Crook also scored in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

All four of Crater's leading scorers are 6-foot-4 or taller.

"They had trouble with our size," said Crater coach Troy McNichols. "That was our goal. We really tried to stretch the floor and deliver it to our big kids."

North Valley led by six points in the second quarter and used its up-tempo offense to put a kink in Crater's offensive strategy.

But the Comets (1-0), buoyed by a stretch of five straight North Valley turnovers late in the third quarter, came out of the break with a 21-13 scoring run to take a 10-point lead heading into the final period.

"Our style of play is up-tempo," said Knights' coach Rob Boye, "and they were willing to run with us. That kept us in the game.

"I thought their depth took over a little in the third quarter. Their physical size started to tire us out a little bit."

Nate Ellis led the Knights (1-2) with 18 points, while Matt Malinoff had 11 and Derekk Vandehey 10. Malinoff also had six assists, with Kevin Rose dishing out five and Vandehey contributing four to go with four steals.
