A new collective exhibit at the Schneider Museum of Art showcases photojournalistic images by two award-winning news photographers.
"Measure of Time," images by David Burnett, and "The Light Becomes Us," by Dennis Dunleavy, capture stories and moments in time that go beyond headlines in newspapers.
Black and white works by Dunleavy that focus on Latin America from 1987 to 1996 fill the main gallery, while news and sports photographs by Burnett are displayed in the Heiter and Treehaven galleries, in the Schneider Museum on the Southern Oregon University campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland.
Dunleavy is an assistant professor at SOU. He worked as a freelancer for The Associated Press and for newspapers in New York, Michigan and Texas. While working for the San Antonio Express News, he traveled frequently to Central America in the 1980s and '90s. He later earned a doctorate and began teaching.
Dunleavy's online blog, "The Big Picture," was recognized in the January/February 2007 edition of American Photo for having significantly impacted the field of visual journalism.
Burnett has documented news and people with his photographs for 40 years. He gained attention for his work in the Vietnam War and founded Contact Press Images in New York in 1976.
He is a recipient of the Magazine Photographer of the Year award; a World Press Photo of the Year winner; and a Robert Capa Award winner from the Overseas Press Club. In 2006, he won first place in the presidential category of the White House News Photographers' Association.
The exhibit at the Schneider Museum will be displayed through Feb. 24. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the first Friday of every month. Admission is $3. See www.sou.edu/sma or call 552-6245
