Cop stop nets pot, no driver

Oregon State Police seized 21 pounds of marijuana from a Jeep Cherokee that its driver abandoned during a traffic stop near Ashland Friday morning, but they're still looking for the man who ran.

An OSP trooper stopped the 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Oregon license plates northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 10 at about 7 a.m. Friday for a traffic violation. During the stop, driver Pedro Lopez Cruz, 20, of California, fled on foot, running east from the freeway, OSP said in a news release.

Oregon State Police troopers and drug enforcement detectives tives obtained a search warrant for the Jeep and discovered about 21 pounds of marijuana inside.

Authorities reported that they have probable cause to arrest Lopez on felony drug charges and a misdemeanor charge of attempting to elude police.

Police suspect Lopez tried to walk from the area or get a ride from a passing motorist. They believe he is headed to Salem.

Police describe him as a Hispanic male, 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing about 145 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and baggy blue jeans.

Anyone who sees a man matching his description is asked to call OSP at 541-664-4600.
