CORVALLIS — As is usually the case, the defense dominated the first scrimmage of spring football practice Saturday on a blustery day at Reser Stadium. The offense generated just two scores in the 93-play drill that featured many first unit or key reserves on the sidelines.
"It certainly looked like the defense dominated and I'm not concerned about that right now," head coach Mike Riley said. "I was actually pretty pleased with the offense for only our eighth practice of the year. We ran the ball pretty consistently today, but we didn't throw the ball well to establish much there."
Oregon State's quarterback foursome of Sean Canfield, Ryan Gunderson, Lyle Moevao and Brennan Sim completed 15 of 42 pass attempts for 180 yards and one touchdown.
Gunderson took a collection of second- and third-team players on an 11-play 70-yard drive that culminated with a 31-yard pass to receiver Sam Oltman for the only touchdown pass. Sim guided the team to the second and final touchdown of the day with a nine-play 70-yard drive that ended in a 2-yard run by Andy Stewart. The score was set up by a 46-yard reception by receiver Aaron Nichols.
Linebackers Joey LaRocque and Dennis Christopher each made an interception of Canfield to hinder the Beaver passing game. Backup safety Austin Hall had the other interception of the day, picking off a stray Gunderson pass.
Numerous Beavers did not play due to injuries or a decision by the coaches, including starters Yvenson Bernard (RB), Brandon Powers (WR), Jeff Van Orsow (DE) and Roy Schuening (OG). Others out of Saturday's action included Micah Strickland (RB), Coye Francies (CB), Matthew Sieverson (WR), Casey Kjos (WR), Gabe Miller (TE) and Derrick Doggett (LB).
"Our third-teamers actually got more work than anybody today and that was really the purpose of the scrimmage," Riley said. "The younger and newer guys got a chance to finish plays; they don't have a chance to do that during regular practices."
