Hornets hold off rally to sweep by Pirates

KLAMATH FALLS — Sixth-ranked Phoenix put together a big seventh-inning rally that fell just short in the first game of a Skyline Conference baseball doubleheader against Henley on Monday.

The fifth-ranked Hornets had no trouble winning Game 2.

The scores were 5-4 and 7-0.

Henley was sailing along with a 5-0 lead in the opener before an error, a walk, two wild pitches and RBI doubles by Dustin Smith and Jake Murphy pulled Phoenix within 5-4. The Pirates had the tying run on second base, but winning pitcher James Nygren got pinch-hitter Kyle Jiron to ground out to end the game.

"They've got some tough outs and some good speed — we felt fortunate to hold on in that first game," Henley coach Joe Tacchini said.

Phoenix pitcher Jordan Lewis struck out 10 but also yielded 10 hits, including a two-run homer by Colin Stock in the second inning.

Phoenix (9-5, 1-2 Skyline) had the bases loaded in the first and sixth innings, and had two runners on in the second, but had no runs to show for it.

The Hornets (11-2, 3-0) had no trouble winning Game 2 thanks to the pitching excellence of senior Kody Fritz, who chucked a two-hit shutout. Fritz, a 6-foot-5 senior right-hander, had just two strikeouts but continually got the Pirates to ground out.
