Ashland designs cable system to look like Ashland

By DANI DODGE

ASHLAND -- From CNN to Playboy to the holistically oriented Wisdom Television, Ashland's cable system will be filled with a range of programming designed to appeal to a diverse community.

The lineup

Premium options: 10 channels that can be purchased individually including HBO, The Movie Channel, Encore, Playboy and Spice.

  • To comment on the proposed programming, e-mail the committee at afnprog@ashlandfn.org  or leave a voice mail message at 552-2222.

Fliers with forms for feedback will be available at City Hall by Tuesday. The brochures also will list the full proposed schedule.

People also can talk to committee members during a call-in program on RVTV, Channel 9, at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

There will even be QVC for those who want to buy ruby rings while they paint their toenails.

"In general the members of our committee don't watch or order from the shopping channels, but we find a lot of people do," said Lenny Neimark, a member of the Ashland Fiber Network Citizen's Cable Programming Committee, which chose a cable lineup for the new municipally owned cable network.

"We were trying to look at the whole community and give them what they wanted," he said.

Ashland's electric department will begin stringing cable lines in Ashland neighborhoods in mid-June. The cable lines will be spliced into Ashland's fiber optic ring, neighborhood node by neighborhood node. The first node to be built will be near Ashland Community Hospital.

The lines will deliver Ashland Fiber Network television beginning as early as July. Over the next year, availability will spread throughout the city.

AFN television is an alternative to Falcon cable that is available only to Ashland residents. A Falcon Cable representative did not return a telephone call.

Prices for the cable programming will be determined by the Ashland City Council on June 1.

The programming committee -- which made initial decisions on what programming to include -- is made up of seven people who submitted their resumes to the mayor. The committee released its decisions this week in hope the public will give them feedback on the choices.

The committee has met weekly since mid-February to come up with cable programming they believe will appeal to Ashland's individual character, as well as fulfill what people expect from a cable service. Neimark said some of the discussions were heated.

"There were some impassioned arguments for what people wanted to see," he said. "Nobody even threw anything."

While one member of the committee advocated for teen programming like MTV, Neimark said getting the Independent Film Channel and Turner Classic Movies was most meaningful for him. Cathy Carrier, a co-chairwoman of the committee, said she wanted Wisdom Television "because I see Ashland as a holistic community."

The description of the channel reads in part: "It informs, entertains, and empowers by showcasing human values and the personal impact of the integration of the mind, body, spirit, and the earth."

Carrier noted that health-related programming was chosen to appeal to seniors, and several educational and child-oriented programs were chosen for families.

Neimark said the committee didn't debate putting the adult channels Playboy and Spice in the lineup. They can be purchased either on the premium option or pay-per-view selections.

"We are not censors and nor do we want to be," Neimark said. "We certainly trust and want to give the members of the community the choice if they wanted to subscribe to them."
