Volunteers will be along Rogue Valley riverbanks in several areas today as part of the annual Down by the Riverside cleanup.

The local tidying is part of a statewide effort to spiff up 360 public areas near rivers.

Volunteers will build trails, plant trees, shrubs and seeds, create butterfly gardens, remove invasive species and clean up litter, among other tasks. The day is organized by SOLV, a nonprofit group whose goal is to beautify Oregon.

In Jackson County, most of the work crews will start around 8:30 or 9 a.m. They’ll be along Bear Creek in Medford, Little Butte Creek in Eagle Point, the Rogue River at Valley of the Rogue State Park, Shady Cove and White City and Elk Creek in Trail.

Specific locations and contact numbers are below:

Eagle Point— Little Butte Creek stream enhancement, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet at the historic bridge. Participants will remove invasive plants and pick up litter. Call 490-9765.

Medford — Bear Creek cleanup, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Meet at Hawthorne Park Pavilion. Participants will pick up litter and stencil storm drains. Call 773-1039.

Medford — Bear Creek Park compost demonstration site, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet at the site. Participants will clean up, weed and do construction. Call 773-4286.

Rogue River — Riparian area cleanup and enhancement, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet at Valley of the Rogue State Park program area.
Participants will pick up litter, clean up the roadside and build bird boxes. Call 761-1673.

Rogue River — Greenway Trail, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet at the program area in Valley of the Rogue State Park. Participants will renovate trails and clean up. Call 582-1118, ext. 23.

Shady Cove — Casey State Park, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet by handicapped parking. Participants will clean up and remove invasive plants. Call 878-3710.

Trail — Elk Creek riverine area improvement, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Follow signs after entering through gate in the riverine area. Participants will install bird boxes, pull fences and invasive plants, prune, plant and clean up. Call 878-2255, ext. 1080.

White City — Tou Velle State Park trailside enhancement, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet at parking area farthest upstream in park. Participants will clean up trails and pick up litter. Call 761-1673.
