MONMOUTH — No coach, no matter.

MONMOUTH — No coach, no matter.

Cascade Christian's Josh Heidegger and Daniel Kinney, who relied on a how-to video, exceptional athleticism and each other, charged to a 1-2 finish in the boys javelin at the Class 2A state track and field championships Saturday at Western Oregon University.

Heidegger, Kinney, discus thrower Jordan Burchfiel and sprinter Jordan Ockunzzi fueled the Challengers to a runner-up finish in the team standings.

Southern Cascade League rival Bonanza, which brought just four competitors to the meet, won the 2A boys title with 83 points. Cascade Christian was second with 60 points while St. Mary's, which won the SCL district crown last week, wound up third at the big dance with 54.

In the 2A girls meet, St. Mary's finished fifth — just missing a state trophy — while Cascade Christian snagged seventh place. Elgin, with 60 points, edged out Lakeview (57) for the title.

Heidegger and Kinney had no event coach this spring, but Mike Schaan, a volunteer assistant in the shot put and discus for the Challengers, handed Heidegger a javelin instruction video last month.

Senior Heidegger studied it, then shared his knowledge with sophomore Kinney.

On Saturday, the twosome ruled the javelin roost. Kinney uncorked a lifetime-best throw by more than 5 feet, reaching 174-9 on his second throw of the day to take the early lead, but Heidegger followed with a toss of 174-10 to edge his teammate by one inch.

"The first couple meets it was pretty obvious that we needed work on our technique," said Heidegger, who won the triple jump a day earlier. "That's when coach Schaan gave me the video. The main thing was getting the right trajectory at the release point. We were either pushing it down or pulling it up too much."

Heidegger and Kinney developed a friendly rivalry during the season and they were as relaxed as a dog in an easy chair Saturday, exchanging banter throughout the competition.

"He beat me last week at district, but not today," Heidegger said with a grin. "I'm going to enjoy this because I don't know how many more times I could beat him. It's scary how good Daniel's going to be."

Kinney, who played baseball last season, didn't take up track until this spring. He credits Heidegger with his success in the javelin.

"He's been like my big brother and my coach," said Kinney, who has registered personal-record throws his last three meets. "I was trying to beat him today, but I'm happy he won."

Kinney also ran a strong leg on Cascade Christian's 4x400 relay team that finished second to St. Mary's.

Burchfiel, meanwhile, finished second to Bonanza's Jon Laidet in the discus and nearly won the competition on his last throw. Burchfiel, who had thrown 151-1 to Laidet's 155-2, unleashed what looked to be the longest mark of the day on his sixth and final attempt, only to foul by stumbling out of the front of the ring.

"I just couldn't keep my balance," said Burchfiel, who came within four feet of his PR. "It's frustrating because he's had my number. It wasn't like I choked, but it's tough to come that close and not win it."

Cascade Christian's other big gun Saturday was Ockunzzi, who took fourth in the 400 (51.34) and anchored the Challengers' 4x100 and 4x400 relay squads that finished third and second, respectively.

As expected, Max Miller served as St. Mary's rocket booster. The senior sprinter got the Crusaders off to a good start by anchoring their 4x100 relay to victory in a season-best time of 44.38.

Miller lost to Bonanza standout Kyle Gomez in the 400 but capped his day with a 49.4-second split in the 4x400 relay — joining Dash Hillgartner, David Delgado and Michael Seus — as St. Mary's clocked 3:26.64 to come within a second of the school record.

"The relays both felt great," Miller said. "We nailed our handoffs in the short relay and everyone ran strong in the longer one."

Delgado further helped St. Mary's cause with a fourth in the 800 (2:01.2) and Seus chipped in a fifth in the 1,500 (4:20.43).

"We got PRs from a lot of kids and did about as well as we could have expected," St. Mary's coach Joe Volk said of his boys team. "We came in thinking we had a chance to win it but those Bonanza kids stepped up and got the job done."

None more so than Gomez, the Antlers' three-sport, all-state athlete. The senior, who's headed to Oregon Tech on basketball and track scholarships, was the 2A boys high-point scorer with 25 points. He literally dove across the finish line of the 400 to triumph in a lifetime-best time of 49.88, added a win in the 200 (23.08) and finished fourth in the 100 (11.67).

"I went out really hard in the 400 because I knew that was the only way I was going to beat Miller," Gomez said. "I had the lead on him, but then he passed me coming off the last turn. Then I gave it everything I had and passed him back. At the finish line, I hit the track and blacked out."

Bonanza also got a win from Andy Davis in the 110 high hurdles (15.56). Sophomore Stephen Dickinson placed in four events for the Antlers.

Freshman Morgan Martin led the St. Mary's girls as she placed second in the 800 (2:23.19), third in the 400 (1:00.91) and ran a leg on the Crusaders' winning 4x400 relay team that clocked a season-best time of 4:08.91.

Rebecca Tribelhorn, who also ran a split on the relay, finished third in the 800 (2:23.23). The other relay members were Nikki Steinsiek and Hanna Heycke.

Rebecca Lass chipped in a fifth in the shot put (34-3) for the Medford team.

The Cascade Christian girls were led by Rachelle Buck, who won the discus on Friday.

Annie Longwill was the Challengers' top performer Saturday as she placed fourth in the triple jump (34-5).

The Challenger girls suffered some bad luck early Saturday when their 4x100 relay team, which boasted the fastest time in the state, dropped the baton and was disqualified. Had the foursome won, Cascade Christian would have taken fourth place in the team standings and collected a state trophy.
