Brian Smith, the former Southern Oregon resident who has been on Mount Everest since March, has reached the summit of the world’s tallest mountain.

Smith reached the top of the 29,035-foot peak at 3 a.m. Thursday in Nepal, or about 3 p.m. today Pacific time.

He was accompanied by Willie Benegas, a climber from the Mountain Madness organization with which Smith originally was climbing, and a Sherpa named Tendi.

Smith gave up clmbing with that group after contracting high-altitude pulmonary edema at 23,000 feet. He retreated to a lower elevation to recover before beginning his ascent again.

Smith is the son of Larry and Linda Smith of Jacksonville.
