PORTLAND — With the game and the season hanging in the balance, Ashland High ace Gus Gaviglio told head coach Don Senestraro that maybe it was time to make a pitching change.

Senestraro knew better.

"Gus, you can finish," he said.

"You're right," Gaviglio answered, "I can."

Nice teamwork.

Gaviglio struck out 10 Roughriders and escaped a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the sixth inning as Ashland advanced to the Class 5A state quarterfinals with a 5-3 win over Roosevelt on Tuesday at Roosevelt High.

Ashland (17-10), which won its eighth game in a row, will host fifth-ranked Corvallis on Friday. A win there would give the Grizzlies the first semifinal berth in program history.

Trailing 1-0, Ashland rallied with three runs on three singles in the third, including back-to-back run-scoring hits by Justin Meza and Gaviglio. Meza went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Gaviglio went 2-for-4 with one RBI as the top five batters in Ashland's lineup blistered Roosevelt at the plate, going 9-for-17.

The Grizzlies added two more runs on five hits in the fourth but missed a chance to bury the Roughriders (14-11) when Hayden Miller grounded out to third with the bases loaded.

Roosevelt finally rattled Gaviglio in the sixth. Leadoff batter Patrick Stauffer singled and Gaviglio hit the next two batters then walked Justin Wilmoth to bring the go-ahead run to the plate.

Gaviglio then got a fly out to right before striking out the next two batters to end the threat for the Southern Sky Conference runners-up.

"The boys had been hitting the ball all year, but they didn't do it today," Roosevelt coach Greg Schwartz said. "(Gaviglio) kept us off balance all day."
