The Southern Oregon University Department of Music will present a number of concerts and recitals in the next few weeks as the academic year draws to a close. All performances will take place in the Music Recital Hall, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland.

The Southern Oregon University Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Terry Longshore will present "Ballet Mécanique" at 8 p.m. Monday, June 4. The program will feature a variety of works for percussion ensemble including duos, small ensembles and large ensembles.

The title piece of the concert is George Antheil's 1952 rescoring of his 1924 work "Ballet Mécanique" for four pianos, two xylophones, glockenspiel, several percussionists, timpani, two airplane propellers, and two electric buzzers.

Originally conceived to be performed along with Fernand Léger's and Dudley Murphy's Dadaist film, the composition and film took on lives of their own after the original version of the piece, which included 16 synchronized player pianos, could not be realized due to technological limitations at the time.

The 1952 version includes four live pianists, performing extremely difficult music, along with the percussion ensemble. The piano parts will be performed by four SOU piano performance majors, Aaron Blenkush, Kristen McCaffrey, Elizabeth Moss, and Joseph Yungen. The Léger and Murphy film will be shown in tandem with the performance of the score.

There will be a pre-concert lecture by Terry Longshore at 7 p.m. in Room 231 of the Music Building. Tickets for this performance are $8 for general admission and free for students.

Percussionist Kevin Conness will present his senior percussion recital at 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 6. Conness has been a student of Terry Longshore and has performed with the Symphonic Band, the Jazz Band, the Percussion Ensemble, and a smaller jazz combo as well as the Rogue Valley Symphony Orchestra, the Ashland City Band and his own individual pursuits. Conness is an instructor for the Mukombe Marimba Club at Ashland Middle School and plays guitar in his current band Sun House Moon.

The recital will feature works for solo percussion and marimba as well as vibraphone. The recital with end with performances by the SOU Jazz Combo.
