Vocals by Lori Brown are the trademark of the locally-based band Soul Food. Brown has been singing since she was a child growing up in the Rogue Valley. She trained as a classical vocalist for seven years, and while she was in high school she placed year after year at the Oregon State Solo Competition. Brown also performed as a bassoonist with the Southern Oregon Youth Symphony for two years.

Today she sings cover tunes by Delbert McClinton, Aretha Franklin, Joss Stone and Susan Tedeschi, as well original songs co-written with bandmate Shawn Moore, and she studies music at Southern Oregon University.

Soul Food will perform at 9 p.m. Friday, May 25, at the Jefferson State Pub, 31B Water St., Ashland.

Along with Brown and drummer and vocalist Moore, the band's lineup includes Neal Peters on guitars, Michael Gantenbein on bass and Joe Diehl on guitar.

Moore holds a music degree from SOU and has performed with various college bands and artists such as Hal Wagonet of It's a Beautiful Day and Lenny Williams of Tower of Power. Peters has worked with many successful artists, including Elvin Bishop, Jefferson Airplane and Sonny Rhodes. Gantenbein studied music at SOU and has worked with a number of bands. He currently teaches applied multimedia at SOU and runs a small recording studio in Phoenix.

Diehl studied with Tower of Power guitarist Bruce Conte and has worked on a range of endeavors that include blues bands and songwriting projects.

He helps arrange some of the original works written by Brown and Moore for Soul Food. Diehl also performs with local bands AnnieMac and the Royal Blues Band.
