ASHLAND — Former Southern Oregon University defensive lineman Willis Cooley has joined the Laredo Lobos of the Arena Football League 2.

The 6-foot-6, 280-pounder, who completed his Raider career last fall, is from Gig Harbor, Wash.

Based in Texas, the Lobos are in their inaugural season and are 1-9. The team's only win came this past weekend, 66-41 over the Texas Copperheads.

Cooley made his debut and had a handful of quarterback hurries, one tackle and an interception.

"I was excited to see Willis sign with the Laredo Lobos,* said SOU coach Steve Helminiak. "He made an immediate impact and started in his first game. I expect Willis will continue to make great gains, and I look forward to seeing his career progress."

Last season, Cooley was seventh on the Raiders with 34 tackles, including 15 solo tackles. He also ranked second with two sacks for a total loss of 8 yards. He also recorded a pass breakup as well as a quarterback hurry.

Cooley is one of three Raiders from the 2006 season to continue their football careers: Gabe Hatchett is with the Miami Dolphins of the NFL, and Kellan Quick has signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.
