Darlene Flannery-Smith-Brazell

June 7, 1950 ~ June 20, 2007

Darlene was born to Steven W. Flannery and Ina Geraldine (Jerrie) Brazell in Ashland, Oregon at the old hospital building that would later become Winburn Hall on Southern Oregon College's campus (now SOU). She was baptized in Emigrant Lake and attended schools in Ashland and Medford. She excelled in track and field, including being a state finalist in shot put and high jump and held the record at Hedrick for many years. At Medford High School, she was active in the choir and theater, making many of the costumes for plays. After leaving the Rogue Valley in 1965, she moved to Ketchikan, Alaska where she met and married Morris "Smitty" Smith. Settling in Texas, she raised her children Michelle (Townsend), Sean, Lance, and Dennis. She was very active in her children's lives, especially as a den mother and team mother. Darlene also played league softball for many years and managed the concession stands for the sports park. Her hobbies included making beautiful crocheted gifts for the family, playing darts, and collecting dolphin figurines. Her truest passion was for her grandchildren, Saundra, Sierra, Kaitland, Nolan, David James (DJ) and Angel. Tragically, Angel died in a horrific car accident. Although devastated, Darlene continued to live her life in the up-beat, positive manner she always had and with such an incredible heart-felt smile and ready laughter that affected us all.

Darlene was preceded in death by her brother, Ken, in 1974, and her father in 1996 and her granddaughter, Angel, in 2000. She is survived by her mother and siblings, Steven (Medford), Virginia Santarini (Sacramento), Janice Havniear (Medford), Richard (Central Point) and Beth (Salem). She also leaves behind a large extended family of relatives and friends. There will be a picnic to celebrate her life today at 12:30 in Lithia Park near playground.
