A 21-year-old man was in critical condition Sunday after his friend reportedly shot him in the abdomen by accident, said Jackson County Undersheriff Rod Countryman.

The apparent mishap occurred at 10:50 p.m. Saturday while the victim, Kenneth Weems, and his friend, Michael Chrisco, 30, of Coos Bay, were inspecting a .357 Magnum snub nose revolver at Weems' home in the 700 block of Old Trail Creek Road in Trail.

Weems was transported by Mercy Flights to Providence Medford Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition late Sunday with a single gunshot wound to his abdomen.

"Every indication is that it was accidental," Countryman said.

Both Weems and Chrisco have given the same explanation for shooting, Countryman said.

No charges have been filed, but the case is still under investigation.

"There is a story as to what occurred," Countryman said. "Detectives are trying to put all the pieces together to make sure it matches the story."
