A former St. Mary’s School coach who was recently hired by South Salem High is accused of raping a 38-year-old acquaintance more than a week ago at his Medford residence.

Victor Matoush, 40, of Medford and Jefferson, Ore., was arrested late Friday at his workplace in Salem on charges of first-degree rape, first-degree sex abuse and coercion. He was transported to Medford and lodged in Jackson County Jail, where he remains in lieu of more than $2 million bail.

The alleged rape reportedly happened June 17 at Matoush’s Medford home in the 1700 block of Concord Way. Search warrants were served for both his Medford and Jefferson residences and his car.

Matoush was a girls’ high school basketball coach for St. Mary’s for the past three years before landing a post at South Salem High School earlier this month.

St. Mary’s Principal Frank Phillips said Matoush never caused any problems at the school.

Matoush had used Phillips as a reference for securing the position as girls basketball coach at South Salem.

Matoush is set to be arraigned on the charges at 1:45 p.m.
