TRAIL — A 21-year-old Trail man accidentally shot in the abdomen this weekend remains in critical condition in a Medford hospital.

Kenneth "Kenny" Weems underwent surgery Monday at Providence Medford Medical Center to repair damage to his liver, said his stepmother, Fawn Weems. The bullet from a .357 Magnum snub-nose revolver ripped upward through his liver and into his lung, she said.

"It was a big relief that he made it through the surgery," she said.

He remains in intensive care, with his dad, Kenneth Weems, at his side. Fawn Weems said Kenny is her husband's oldest son and grew up hunting and fishing with his dad, who had taught him about gun safety.

The shooting happened at about 10:50 p.m. Saturday while Kenny Weems and his friend Michael Chrisco, 30, examined a gun at Chrisco's house in the 700 block of Old Trail Creek Road in Trail, Fawn Weems said.

"They are good friends and Mike is just devastated," she said.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters said the shooting appeared to be accidental and no charges have been filed.
