ROSEBURG — The Medford Mustangs saved the best for last Friday night during an American Legion AAA baseball doubleheader against Roseburg Doc Stewarts.

Having already lost the opener, 4-2, Medford's Logan Odom sent a towering two-run home run over the right-field wall in the top of the seventh inning of Game 2 to lift the Mustangs to a 2-1 win and a crucial split in the Area 4 twin bill.

Odom's homer came on a 2-1 pitch from Roseburg pitcher Chad Hanson, who had given up just one hit — an infield single by Darren Bruhns in the fourth — until the go-ahead blast. Dustin Smith drew the first walk issued by Hanson prior to the home run by Odom.

Smith also turned in a clutch defensive play in support of pitcher Jordan Lewis.

With two outs and runners on first and second in the sixth inning, Doc Stewart cleanup hitter Eric Savage sent a hot shot up the middle. Smith ranged to his right from his second-base position, back-handed the ball and gunned down Savage at first to end the inning and erase a sure-fire run for Roseburg.

Lewis went the distance, giving up three hits and striking out six while improving to 8-1. The lone run against him came on a solo homer in the fourth inning.

In the opener, the Mustangs stranded nine base runners and couldn't recover from a four-run first inning by Roseburg against starter Matt Maurer.

Maurer gave up three runs on a pair of bloop RBI singles, and he hit a batter with the bases loaded to force in a run in the opening frame. Maurer fell to 3-4 despite giving up just five hits in the contest.

Griff Boyd, Jared Smith, Jordan Bostwick and Dustin Smith each had two hits apiece to lead Medford.

Medford (25-14, 6-6 Area 4) is battling for one of the three playoff berths from Area 4 with the season winding down.

The Mustangs end the regular season with doubleheaders against Grants Pass on Tuesday and against Eugene next Friday. Both twin bills are at Harry & David Field.

ASHLAND PILOTS 6-3, NORTH JACKSON EAGLES 5-1 — At Eagle Point, Ashland survived a seventh-inning comeback by North Jackson in the opener, then rallied for a nine-inning victory in an American Legion A Area 4 doubleheader at The Yard on Thursday.

In Game 1, North Jackson (9-22, 5-19 Area 4) put up five runs in the seventh inning to pull within 6-5. With runners on the corners and two outs, Ashland shortstop Owen Baldrica snagged a line drive above his head by North Jackson's Frank Charlton to save the victory for the Pilots.

In the nightcap, Lewis Sebrell's go-ahead, two-run double with the bases loaded in the ninth gave Ashland the eventual Game 2 win.

Charlton tossed a shutout through six innings but gave up an RBI single to Ashland's Timmy Zomerdyk to tie it 1-all in the top of the seventh.

In the first contest, Baldrica, Sam Gaviglio and Luke Jannusch each went 2-for-3 for Ashland. Jannusch also added a two-run double.

Ryan Smith had a two-run double in the opener for the Eagles.
