Betty Jane Johnson

We will remember that smile!

Betty Jane Johnson was born December 6, 1947 to parents, Carl and Elizabeth Shaw. Betty lost her nine-year battle with breast cancer on July 10, 2007 at her home in Medford.

Betty grew up in Hermiston, Ore., where she graduated from Hermiston High School. She went to Oregon State University and received her Bachelor's Degree in library science. In 1976, she married Gus Johnson and moved to Ashland to work for the Southern Oregon University library. During her marriage, she helped raise a stepdaughter. She lived in Ashland until her divorce in 2003, when she moved to Medford. After retiring from the library, she was able to enjoy the many things she was enthusiastic about.

Betty loved calligraphy, bookbinding, traveling, gardening, horseback riding, drumming and "critters" of all kinds. A small, black dog, named Ben, was her companion on walks through her neighborhood. Betty enjoyed volunteering at the Science Works Museum in Ashland. She had many friends and always had room for more in her life.

Betty is survived by her parents, Carl and Elizabeth Shaw, of Hermiston, Ore.; her sister, Dorothy Jones of Vancouver, Wash.; her niece, Elaine Berry of Vancouver, Wash.; her stepdaughter, Nicole Maxwell of North Hills, Calif.; and her step-grandchildren, Erin, Morgan and Logan Maxwell of North Hills, Calif.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on August 4, 2007 at 1119 Mira Mar in Medford. Donations in Betty's name may be made to breast cancer research or a favorite animal clinic in the Ashland-Medford area.
