HAPPY CAMP, Calif. — One man died and a second remained missing Monday evening in the Klamath River after a swimming outing turned tragic, authorities said.

The two men were swimming with a third man in the river near Clear Creek when the two victims apparently disappeared in the water, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department.

The third man then telephoned police at 2:44 p.m. to report the incident, deputies said. Two Happy Camp residents used their boats the search the river while deputies walked the banks, deputies said.

It wasn't until a California Highway Patrol helicopter was called in that one of the victims was spotted, apparently drowned in a 15-foot pool where the men were last seen, deputies said.

A dive team was en route from Yreka on Monday evening to recover the body and search for the second victim, deputies said. Police had released no names of people involved as of late Monday.
