A grass fire that started near Old Stage Road raced toward Galls Creek, threatening homes and frightening livestock, but crews have gained the upper hand, authorities said.

Firefighters from Rogue River Fire District No. 1, Jackson County Fire District No. 3 and Oregon Department of Forestry attacked the wind-driven flames. Two helicopters dumping water from the Rogue River and a plane that dropped three loads of fire retardant joined the effort.

The fire started in waist-high dry grass in a field and spread rapidly up a slope.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department restricted traffic around the fire and flames visible from Interstate 5 slowed freeway traffic.
