The Mount Ashland ski area will not operate on Mondays and Tuesdays during the 2007-08 season.

The ski area also will eliminate Saturday night skiing, said Rick Saul, marketing director.

Saul said Thursday that the ski area reluctantly decided to eliminate those shifts rather than raise ticket prices. He said Mondays and Tuesdays and Saturday nights have historically been money-losing shifts. Promotional efforts such as reduced price lift tickets on Mondays and Tuesdays have failed to bring in enough skiers to cover the costs of staffing, Saul said.

He said the ski area needs to operate in a financially responsible manner to be able to pay for new rental gear, grooming equipment and other amenities that skiers and snowboarders expect.

Saul said Mount Ashland is the last small-scale ski area in the Northwest to adopt a schedule with some midweek closures.

He said season pass holders were informed of the change by mail earlier this week, and will be offered a full refund.
